Allotments

How It Began!

The allotments began in 2006, after a local woman approached us and told us her daughter thought potatoes came from a cow!

We got in contact with Salford Council, and told them about the situation, then the following day they got us a plot, however this first plot wasn’t viable for the work we were planning on doing, so they gave us another plot which just so happened to be Lesley’s uncles plot after he unfortunately passed, making it a nice legacy for us to carry on in the community.

When we first got our plot. It was a very unkempt area with weeds all the way up to your waist, working with the young people, we got the plot into a functioning order and the first crop we planted was potatoes along with the young girl who thought it came from a cow, and when they were ready we got her to harvest them and she was amazed by the fact they grew in the ground!

Here are some photos of our allotments in the earlier years!

How It’s Going

Working on the plot every week, with the continued financial support from Vegware, which has enable us to have work done on our plot as well as buy seeds and a equipment, we have been able to make vast improvements to make it more accessible to the community, and thanks to the continued work our volunteers have done we now have a large community shed, a dedicated area with accessible work benches, as well as raised beds, a walk-in fruit and vegetable cage and a seating area covered by a large purpose built gazebo to protect people from the elements.

With these assets in place we have been able to work with a wide variety of people including those with mental or physical disabilities, ex-war veterans, young people and elder members of the community.
